Rolling Stones
Worldwide I: An
Anthology Of Original
Singles & EP
Releases 1963-1971
by Christoph Maus
Today’s papers – full of rarities
Picking up from where Alan Clayson’s UK-based Album File & Complete Discography (reviewed in RC 330) left off, Maus’ primarily picture-based worldwide discography does precisely what it claims. There’s more than 50 countries’ worth of single and EP releases to explore (the 50th, Panama, is actually an illegal pressing), all with great colour picture sleeves and annotations for each entry. There’s not much in the way of musical evaluation, but who needs that when you’ve a wealth of release information and minutiae that you just can’t get anywhere else? There’s also a specific West Germany section (in the native tongue, of course), and a very brief look at releases from ‘Utopia’ – bootleg singles that it would have been nice to have seen released. A fascinating look at Rolling Stones releases, from the minute quantities on offer in Bolivia, to the comparative warehouse of releases from Britain. Essential for completists.
