Art Garfunkel - Some Enchanted Evening
A perfect marriage of singer and song
More than 30 years after topping the UK charts with I Only Have Eyes For You, Art Garfunkel has returned to the golden era of American songwriting to give us his interpretations of Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers & Hammerstein and others. The world may not need any more Someone To Watch Over Mes or Let’s Fall In Loves, but it’s hard not to be seduced by one of the most delicate, ethereal voices in pop history.
Reuniting with producer Richard Perry (with whom he worked immediately after parting ways with Paul Simon), Garfunkel has made little changes to the mood or arrangements of the songs he tackles and merely allows his beautiful vocals to drift over the tunes like a sheet of gossamer. It’s hopelessly romantic, and all the better for it. Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars swirls out of the speakers with heart-wrenching gorgeousness, while his take on I’m Glad There Is You is practically wedding vows set to music.
Westlife, Robbie or even X Factor loser Ray Quinn may fool themselves into thinking they can do justice to this material, butGarfunkel lives and breathes every syllable of these songs with an understated passion that could bring even the stoniest of souls to their knees.
