Tangerine Dream
London Astoria
20th April, 2007

On a hot April evening, screens projected pounding rain as Edgar Froese and Tangerine Dream showcased their tribute to Syd Barrett, Madcap’s Flaming Duty. Chris Hausl’s strident vocals dominate the first hour, towering over the backing track like a sinister Depeche Mode, notably on Hymn and Intellectual Beauty. If the rain-maker instruments and Iris Camaa’s drums bring to mind Enigma, Tangerine Dream are best when they let their driving, loping rhythms meld. The climax, including a soaring House Of The Rising Sun, incites whoops of joy from a faithful crowd.
