London Barbican

View: marvellous
A new three-piece VDGG swung hard and heavy, making their triumphant 2005 reunion shows almost tame in comparison. The epitome of algebraic, weirdybeardy music, enthusiasts were treated to Gog, (In The) Black Room, Meurglys III, The Songwriter’s Guild, Killer, Lemmings and Sleepwalkers. Although David Jackson’s sax was missed in the earlier stages, by the scintillating second new song, All That Before, it was like they’d always been a power-trio. With Guy Evans behind his cymbals, Hugh Banton making the majority of the noise from his keyboard, and Hammill playing more electric than usual, a strong sense of fun emerged through the density and was very beautiful to behold.
