Anne Briggs - Sing A Song For You
Folk queen’s jewels rediscovered
If you can directly influence great singers such as Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Linda Thompson, you must be doing something right. And so we come to this year’s big folk revival, Anne Briggs: a superlative singer and a great British folk talent. She actually changed the face of female folk, though she only released two commercial albums before deciding to stop singing at the age of 27. She disliked the sound of her own voice so much, she hasn’t sung in public since. This collection features songs recorded with the band Ragged Robin in 1973, and was originally released on CD in 1996 by Fledgling. This vinyl issue is limited to just 1000 copies and features sleevenotes by Briggs, Lal and Norma Waterson, Mike Gavin and Steve Ashley from Ragged Robin. Her songs span both traditional and original material and include Summer’s In, Tongue In Cheek and Sovay, adding a rock tinge to the folk delivery.
