The Hollies - Finest

Class act all the way

Unlike many of their ‘two hits and bye bye’ contemporaries, The Hollies have lasted, thanks to their performing and writing talents. Initially choosing good material to cover, they blossomed early on with original material written under their ‘L Ransford’ alias, firstly to be found behind album tracks, and then on hits such as On A Carousel and the wonderful Carrie Anne. After embracing Dylan with strong covers of The Times They Are AChangin’ and Just Like A Woman (both included here), The Hollies went on to try psych-pop with their Evolution album, from which here three tracks are taken.

This chronological double-disc set presents the expected hits alongside well chosen album and later singles cuts, such as the fine Step Inside from 1967’s Butterfly. It goes right up to last year’s Staying Power with Let Love Pass, and the whole is packaged with reproductions of all their albums and EPs, with some notes from Bobby Elliott. Fans will love it, and if you don’t have a Hollies collection, this is the one to get.
