Faust - Faust In Autumn
4-CD document of anarcho- Krautrockers’ 2005 UK tour
‘The records should sound like bootlegs,’ declared Faust founder Uwe Nettelbeck in 1973. Sadly, he died in January, but this 4-CD box acts as a fitting epitaph. It’s as if someone has turned on a cassette recorder and simply let it roll to capture the chaotic, mischievous assault of a group who were furthest out of the early 70s German electronic swashbucklers.
Faust were responsible for two of Krautrock’s supreme collectables with their X-ray hand debut and art print-accompanied follow-up. With their anything-canhappen reputation, Faust could have farted onstage and received sagely nods. Metaphorically, they did. Live shows were trouserdroppingly anarchic, provocative and occasionally threw in ‘the hits’. No change there, as this nicelypackaged document of their 2005 UK tour with original members Zappi Diermaier, Jean-Herve Peron and Amaury, shows. Tracks from the first four albums are here, including Rainy Day, Baby Is Blue and The Sad Skinhead, amidst electronic static, shouting and free jazz squalling, sometimes recalling the early proto-metal lumberings of Ash Ra Tempel. Traditionally, this nicely-packaged labour of love from Dirter boss and lifelong Fauster Steve Pittis will cause devotees to smile or scratch their heads (and neatly coincides with a June UK tour). Do it for Uwe.
