The Danse Society International - Looking Through

Danse danse danse to the radio? We think not…

Barnsley’s Danse Society were highly regarded Gothspawn with the moves, looks and songs to build up a solid following. Indeed, after two albums and an unwise cover version of the Stones’ 2000 Light Years From Home, by the mid-80s they appeared on the brink of cracking the big time. Sadly, with their record label Arista refusing to support an extended American tour, things fell apart and the band were dropped.

The tracks on what became Looking Through were a series of demos recorded with a view to secure a major label deal. When none was forthcoming, the band released them as an album on the Society label. Although none of the tracks are rough and ready – far from it – there’s a listlessness and pulse-by-numbers which stems from having sights set on making the tracks throb with a dance beat. There’s no sparkle and it all recalls the sad end of Cabaret Voltaire, their last album a failed, desperate attempt to score hits. With the right production Runaway might have been the hit they were looking for, but who cares today? This album is for Society members only.
