Black Rebel Motorcycle Club were always one of the most interesting of the plethora of guitar-based bands that emerged in the noughties. While early Jesus & Mary Chain comparisons have proven hard to shake off, there’s more depth to them than that. Playing a one-off gig to road test new material, the leather-clad trio got back to basics. The new tracks have a lean, fast feel, with huge choruses. Opener Berlin, and new single Weapon Of Choice stood out, the band thrusting themselves around the tiny stage amid flickering red lights and smoke machines. But the classics received the biggest response, the bassheavy Stop, a gloomy, suffocating Love Burns, and an explosively punchy Whatever Happened To My Rock’n’Roll rippled with life. The acoustic, country-flavoured numbers such as Shuffle Your Feet also showed the band’s flexibility. The oft-humourless BRMC were in good spirits throughout and, on this evidence, there’s plenty to be upbeat about.
