Metallica
London Wembley Stadium
8th July, 2007
View: media lounge, darling
After excellent supports from Mastodon and Machine Head, plus the less enthralling HIM, Metallica came on at 7.30 and delivered two and a half gobsmacking hours of mostly oldschool material. Ageing fans and emo kids appreciated that the set only included two post-Black Album songs (The Memory Remains, No Leaf Clover), and included warp-speed thrash classics like Disposable Heroes. Slowing down for anthems Enter Sandman, Creeping Death and Orion, the band worked the crowd expertly, only spoiling the momentum with a couple of gratuitous, indistinct solos. Winding down with a blistering Whiplash and predictable Seek And Destroy – squeezing the songs in before the 10pm curfew – they left as acknowledged masters of stadium metal.
