Paul McCartney
London Camden Electric Ballroom
7th June, 2007
View: very close indeed
There was magic in the air as McCartney played this 90-minute no-frills wristband-only show to promote Memory Almost Full. In front of 1,000 hardcore fans, celebrities and industry heavyweights, he played a blinder. His banter about Forthlin Road, John, George and Linda, made you realise that this is an ex- Beatle – and the one with the tunes. There was no mawkish sentimentality, nothing from Sgt. Pepper in the week of its 40th Anniversary. Just great songs, the new material slotting in perfectly. He mugged, shrugged and popped out classics aplenty, the Get Back/ Hey Jude/Let It Be/I Saw Her Standing There finale seeing all go ape-crazy, industry cynics moved to tears, Pierce Brosnan boogieing, and David Gilmour smiling serenely from the balcony.
