View: back, central
Following their successful comeback after 10 years, Evan Dando’s power-punk trio shamble on stage for The Great Big No, and it’s obvious he’s not lost any of the old magic. A string of classics interspersed with newer material follows, but it’s apparent all is not right as excessive feedback disrupts proceedings. It’s no surprise the atmosphere is rather subdued, but things come to a head when a fan gets on stage and grabs the microphone, halting Rudderless mid-chorus. Chaos ensues. Eventually Dando kicks security off-stage and the fan provides lead vocal as the band play a couple more verses. Returning to the crowd, said fan is unceremoniously removed by the bouncers, all of which spurs the band on. A brilliant acoustic set follows, including Bit Part, Being Around and a classic Different Drum. The interruption could’ve done for a lesser man, but Dando rose to the occasion and the evening ended on an unexpected high.
