Joan As Police Woman
London Scala
12th April, 2007

View: close up, stage-left

Joan Wasser is trying to create a mood, heavy-breathing close to the microphone. Aside from some hilarious crowd witticisms that don’t go down too well, she commands the stage from the moment she kicks off the heartswelling To Be Lonely. Her honest, charged dissections of modern relationships are lent devastating power by her rich husky voice, and there’s a jazziness reminiscent of Laura Nyro in her subtlest moments. But there’s individuality to Joan’s velvety torch songs too. The funky, shuffling Save Me and delicate, raw Real Life are highlights, while Eternal Flame is pure beauty.
