To-Mera
London Camden Underworld
16th July, 2010
View: standing
Opener The Lie aptly demonstrates the proficiency of this talented band, and their ability to deliver the goods to a (sadly spartan) audience. The varied styles within the complex songs are beautifully embellished by singer Julie Kiss’ often mystical, flowing tones. Arcane Solace, with crunching riffs and eerie guitar, provides a wonderful fusion of discord and harmony. To-Mera capture the attention throughout their 10-song set (and rapid-fire encore), with a powerful rhythm section driving a varied soundscape, with subtle layers and haunting vocals leading into brutal onslaughts and crescendos. Grinding riffs intertwine with a calming voice above tempestuous instrumental undercurrents. Time-changes abound on tracks such as Parfum, the band moving with confident control through a multifaceted flux of rhythms, powerhouse bass, discordant guitar and flowing vocals.
