Randy Newman
Gateshead Sage
16th May, 2010
View: front row, centre
Anyone going to a Randy Newman concert knows what to expect. No fanfare, a quick stroll to the piano and off. What follows is mesmerising. The set-list took in Short People, You Can Keep Your Hat On, Love Story and I Think Its Going To Rain Today and, as usual, Randy made them all seem fresh, witty and poignant. He played a few from his latest, Harps And Angels, but the highlight was a song from one of his lesser albums, Bad Love. He somehow made I Miss You appear more desolate than the superb studio version. Never one to outstay his welcome, Feels Like Home topped his encore, ending a show full of humour and great songs. Just one point – over three quarters of the songs he played here, he played in 1978!
