The Vacants - Worthless Trash

Curiosity value for punks and Pretenders fans

The Vacants were formed in early 1976 by singer Vincent Sharp, guitarist Dan Druff and guitarist Tim Nervous, and spent the best part of a year knocking a set into shape in Nervous’ attic, with various drummers and bassists.

Future Pretender Martin Chambers was installed as drummer in time to record a demo in early 1977, and RCA employee Sharp played it to colleague Eddie Bourne, who was also involved with a dodgy-sounding outfit called Beatt International [sic], who were up for an album of punk covers to flog overseas. The band instead gave them an album of assorted covers – of which only Ramones’ Beat On The Brat counted as punk – and eight original songs.

The tracks were hastily recorded in one evening at Milner Sound Studios on the Fulham Road – and it sounds like it. Surprisingly, though, the album was released in many countries, including Italy, Spain, France and Australia. This is, however, the first time it has been given a UK release.
