The Rolling Stones - Stones In Exile
Jaw-dropping visual companion to the reissue
The reappearance of Exile On Main Street with beautifully tarted up outtakes has to end up the year’s most monumental reissue. The Super Deluxe version also boasts a DVD featuring bits of Cocksucker Blues, Ladies & Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones and this unadulterated Stones-approved gem which looks at the album’s creation. The full documentary is also getting separate release, one of those rare occasions when a making of… skyrockets beyond the usual talking head analysis, illustrating the story with modern narrative from the relevant Stones, Bobby Keys, engineer Andy Johns, Anita Pallenberg and photographer Dominique Tarle, who spent six months at Keith’s Riviera villa during the most infamous phase of the album’s creation, capturing the immortal images which punctuate the film.
The narrative is also illustrated by Super 8-style footage of the Stones at play on the Riviera, recording in Keith’s notorious basement and taking the songs to the stage. The album truly springs to life as the film works through the 18 tracks, while the extras include a cackling Keith interview and Jagger and Watts bantering with a rare poignancy as they return to Stargroves and Olympic Studios, where the album was germinated. There are also tributes from the likes of Jack White, Sheryl Crow and Martin Scorcese. Director Stephen Kijack can’t resist the TV-out-of-the-window scene but, after such a barrage of superlative new Stones material, even that seems surplus to requirements.
