Gruff, gravel-voiced indie-rockers and late-90s hit-makers, Gomez gave their sell-out crowd a solid performance for the third time in 2009. Their Americana/country, mixed with English rock from the North worked well, the band performing a tight set that included a cross-section of tracks from the full breadth of their career. Opener Tijuana Lady set the tone for a raucous evening of hits, with the hoarse, rasping vocals of Ian Bell more than matched by the waifish, tender vocals and up-beat humour of Ben Ottewell and Tom Gray, respectively. Girlshapedlovedrug and other new tracks were well received, but the largest cheer was reserved for the classic Rhythm & Blues Alibi and Detroit Swing 66. This – the last night of their tour – saw a relaxed band, cracking open beers through the evening and playing a tightly-honed set, ignoring requests but enjoying themselves immensely.
