Tonight’s PiL gig made me uncomfortable. Not because you end up seeing much of the gig through the screen of someone else’s camera-phone, but John Lydon broke down in tears halfway through Death Disco, his father’s recent death bringing emotions to the surface. Kicking off with Public Image, however, much of the set contained material from Metal Box and 9. And with the latter’s Bruce Smith and Lu Edmunds back in the fold, accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Scott Firth, even the most challenging material got the crowd punching the air. Following an hour and a half on stage, Lydon popped out for a quick smoke before returning for solo track, In The Sun, Rise, and a very faithful and well received Open Up. While the Pistols are of their time, the experimental nature of PiL means songs such as Warrior can be updated with a rant about MP expenses. As Lydon barks, “I’ve been away for a while, but now I’m back”. About bloody time!
