Freddie Hubbard - Goin’ Up
Emphatically not elevator music
Hubbard was one of the all-time great trumpet players who could vary his attack in a free-ranging improvisational style. He’s better known as a hard bop stylist, which is where this album, (his second LP) originally released on Blue Note, comes in. Featuring Hank Mobley on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on keys, bassist Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on drums, it includes compositions from Hubbard, Mobley and Kenny Dorham. Already forging his own style through a selection of excellent solo works, Hubbard’s ballad playing reveals a more emotionally-driven technique. A first-rate set.
