Autograph - That’s The Stuff
US hair-metallers’ 1985 outing
Led by singer/guitarist Steve Plunkett, this West Coast quintet unleashed a 10-tracker that spawned stateside hits and supports with the likes of Mötley Crüe in the middle of the 80s. Their label reissued the platter with a slick cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s We’re An American Band, to distinguish them from Russia’s Autograf (who’d appeared at Live Aid). But they did little else to support the group, whose bubble soon burst.
In truth, Autograph didn’t really stand out from the hirsute crowd, though the title track is catchy in a Power Of Love-type way, while the brassy Blondes In Black Cars has a Crüe singalong quality and Six String Fever has some sweet guitar. There’s plenty of riffage to complement the big harmonies, but with a dated syn-drum beat throughout, it’s very 80s.
