Herbie Mann - Live At The Village Gate

Man oh Mann…

Of the dozens of LPs that the prolific Mann has produced, this has to be in his five most accomplished. The early 60s saw Mann become the most popular jazz flautist of his time, recording with many greats such as Bill Evans and Roy Ayers. This album, recorded for Atlantic in 1961, features Mann’s first and probably best-known hit single, Comin’ Home Baby. For this recording, the composer Ben Tucker was standing right to Mann on second bass, along with vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, drummer Rudy Collins and percussionists Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla. Blessed with superb improvisational skills, Mann was never afraid to push the boundaries, which makes listening to this LP such a joy.
