Georgie Fame - Mod Classics: From The Flamingo Into The Soho Dawn 1964-1966
Groovin’ at The Flamingo-go
For several years in the mid-60s, Georgie Fame and the various Blue Flames line-ups were the benchmark that other acts aspired to. Fame’s residency at The Flamingo attracted a hugely loyal following (certainly not just mods – whatever revisionists may tell you), not just giving his audience the hottest live ticket in town, but also a Masters-level induction into the black American soul and R&B of the day.
This 24-track collection, drawn from Fame’s various Columbia albums and EPs, features the best of his takes on then-obscure songs from New York, Detroit, Memphis and New Orleans. They’re all served up in driving band orchestrations based on the man’s soulful, husky voice, Hammond organ and brass. Get On The Right Track Baby, See Saw, Soul Stomp, Move It On Over and Last Night are all fine examples, but we also delight in Fame’s almost definitive performance of Funny How Time Slips Away and his jazzy, restrained take on Neal Hefti’s Li’l Darlin’. A fine artist and band then, and just as fine now.
