Air Race - Shaft Of Light
Classic British AOR debut, from 1984
Matching the Americans at their AOR/ melodic rock game, the quintet fronted by mellifluous-voiced singer Keith Murrell, and including ex- More guitarist Laurie Mansworth and then-teen drummer Jason Bonham, crafted a 10-song corker to do battle with the likes of FM, and their transatlantic inspirations Foreigner. While there’s a syndrum sheen throughout (thanks to manager Peter Grant’s influence), and plenty of tinkly keys, the songcraft is evident to hear, from the opening harmonies of I Don’t Care and Zep-style rocker First One Over The Line, to the chugging Caught In The Game (not the Survivor hit) and anthemic Do You Want My Love Again. With two rather hissy but worthy demo bonuses, and a new album in the offing, the Racers are flying high again.
