Deep Purple
London Hammersmith Apollo
14th November, 2009
View: front, circle
Deep Purple had just racked up their 2000th gig on this tour, a magnificent feat stretching back to April 1968. Best known for songs like Smoke On The Water and Black Night, Ian Gillan wailed alongside long-time bandmates Roger Glover and Ian Paice, while Blackmore’s accomplished replacement Steve Morse led the way, and keyboard wizard Don Airey was the new Gandalf in Jon Lord’s stead. The concert was a gas throughout and featured classic whoops and yells from the barefooted Gillan, and plenty of air guitar from the crowd to accompany Morse on the many standout riffathons from the band’s catalogue, with Strange Kind Of Woman, Hush and Speed King reminding everyone just how good the DP brand of classic rock still is.
