Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings - Best Of

What Bill’s been doing since he stopped rolling

No one can doubt Bill Wyman’s love of old fashioned rock’n’roll, boogie woogie and roots music. As an ex-Stone, he’s also able to attract a stellar cast to help him recreate the music of his youth. This stunningly-packaged retrospective selects from five studio albums cut from 1992 to date, and is full of fascinating song choice explanations from the bassman himself. Aurally, however, it represents 21 pizzas, all decorated with as many toppings as possible. After five or six, you’re beginning to feel a little full; it’s best not to consume at one sitting.

The songs picked here are far from obvious choices, and it might not be until track 16, Creedence’s Green River, that a familiar tune pops up. As Bill himself suggests, though, he was able to please himself after his first album, so a take on sometime Stones staple Down Home Girl is the other most famous selection.

There’s no doubt that the songs here would make a great night out if delivered live. That said, you’re not going to be able to fit Georgie Fame, Albert Lee, Chris Rea, Paul Carrack, Mark Knopfler etc onto the same stage, so pay your money and take your choice…
