Bobby Russell & Bergen White - Bobby & Bergen

Nashville’s backroom boys

Russell and White were foremost in the coterie of sessioneers who were cutting hundreds of quick pop songs and covers in Nashville in the 60s. Releasing records under a huge variety of names, much like California’s Gary Usher, their output mostly appeared on the Spar label or related cheaper covers imprints.

This hotchpotch collection, with distinctly variable production mixes, is drawn roughly from 1964 onwards, and kicks off with The Whole Summer Through, sounding like a Ronny & The Daytonas outtake, and is followed by a Tokens-styled She’s Come Of Age. After these, the fare varies from rather nondescript pop outings to some predictable country songs and a vague attempt at a Righteous Brothers sound on You’re Slipping Away From Me. If you enjoyed Bergen White’s fine For Women Only album, this oddly-ordered set will probably disappoint.
