Duane Eddy - Guitar Man
The twang man’s 70s resurgence
This was the British-made album that arrived on the back of Eddy’s pastiche 1975 hit Play Me Like You Play Your Guitar. Working with writer/producer Tony Macaulay, the pair were able to recreate assorted elements of Eddy’s classic hit sound from some 15 years before, in a very similar way to Macaulay’s re-working of The Drifters. The main constituent parts were, however, never quite the same: the female back-ups didn’t match the power and edge of The Blossoms in the 60s, while Eddy’s guitar sound never quite attains that distinctive stomach-wobbling resonant twang. Having said that, this is enjoyable enough for the predictable re-tread that it is, and even includes some Duane “singing”, over which it may be kinder to draw a veil.
