Eddie & The Hot Rods - The Singles Collection
All the Rods’ A-sides
For a while, Eddie & The Hot Rods nimbly straddled the punk/ pub rock divide and had the best of both worlds. As, however, history relentlessly throws up their famous tiff with support band the Sex Pistols at the Marquee, they will never be regarded as cool.
Who cares about that, though, when, firing on all cylinders, the band’s blend of chunky, strident R&B and poppy punk was unbeatable. Debut single Cruisin’ In The Lincoln, released by Island on 18 March 1976, was decent enough, replete with Lew Lewis’ shrill harmonica, but The Hot Rods didn’t chart until their third release, Live At The Marquee, reached No 43. Most of the band’s five hit singles stalled at around the same mark, except, of course, Do Anything You Wanna Do. A fairly simple slab of punk-pop it may have been, but it was also strangely moving with a rousing hook and chorus – a classic, in fact, which well deserved its No 9 chart placing.
This set rounds up all the band’s A-sides up to their 1981 EMI single Farther On Down The Road, and boasts neat sleevenotes and foreign sleeve reproductions.
