Connie Francis - Rockin’ Connie
Mama’s hot sauce and sass
From the earliest track here, the risque Eighteen, originally released in 1957, it’s obvious that Francis was no lightweight when it came to recording rocking material. Sounding thoroughly convincing on either small group or bigger band backing, we’re given a mix of 50s mid-tempo power – as with Lock Up Your Heart, the Brill Building pop of I’m Gonna Be Warm This Winter and Don’t Ever Leave Me – and pure rock’n’roll with Heartbreak Hotel and Ain’t That A Shame.
Francis recorded prolifically and Ace have dug out some of her best, more obscure cuts in Hollywood (with a killer Boots Randolph sax break), the splendid rocker Gonna Get That Man, and several goodies from her Do The Twist album. 1962/63 saw Francis move into girl group-styled recordings, with My Best Friend Barbara, Souvenirs and Your Other Love standing out. A decent Connie Francis set has been long overdue: now we have it.
