Anvil - Past & Present: Live In Concert
Canadian warhorses hammer it out
While Anvil have ridden the crest of a wave on the back of their documentary film, there’s substance as well as style to the growing legend, as witnessed by those at Download. For those unfamiliar with their brand of trad metal, this vintage live set serves as a wily intro. We get 11 hammerblows, kicking off with the Budgie-esque opener Concrete Jungle, by way of early Maiden-styled numbers such as Motormount and March Of The Crabs (which wanders blindly sideways into a drum solo), and the more gothically-toned Blood On Ice, with its devilish doubletapping. While many bands claim to be the inspiration for Spinal Tap, that band’s sound couldn’t be more Anvil, as on the posturing Forged In Fire and ludicrous Metal On Metal. Steve “Lips” Kudlow and his metallic trio deliver throughout.
