Terry Reid
Southsea Eastney Tavern Cellars
2nd September, 2009

View: front seating

Surprisingly, not a full house, but those present were treated to an evening of intimacy and emotion, as if you were sitting on Terry’s front porch. Accompanied by guitarist Eddie for his third visit to The Cellars, at various times we were taken to New Orleans and California – via songs by Graham Nash and J.D. Souther – and even Durham. The trip was accompanied by anecdotes galore, from father-son advice, to early encounters with influential luminaries such as Richie Havens, and a sly reference to Led Zeppelin. Terry opened his heart and shed a tear or two along the way, with West Coast soul predominating, a show-stopping interpretation of Souther’s Between The Leaving And The Gone serving as a stunning end to the first half. He then invoked the ghost of Otis Redding and namechecked Sam Cooke and Justin Timberlake, illustrating his musical savvy and range of influences. A true, soulful geezer.
