Beat Boys - Beat Boys

The Tropicália army s unsung recruits

A group with a distinctly political edge, it wasn’t until Caetano Veloso (a political activist/musician and the Bob Dylan of Brazil) and Gilberto Gil discovered this outfit in a nightclub that their star briefly rose. Beat Boys joined Os Mutantes, The Beatniks and Os Baobas as radical groups on the often dangerous Brazilian music scene. They backed Veloso during his charged, on-stage 60s rendition of Algeria Algeria that almost caused a riot. Once Veloso and Gil were imprisoned and exiled, however, the lack of guidance proved disastrous for the Beat Boys, who withered on the vine. Recommended to both Tropicália fans and 60s obscurists, this album features the group’s entire output, from their early Beatles-esque warblings to later, psych-infused, close harmony endeavours.
