Bruce Haack - The Electric Lucifer

Pioneering electronic concept album from Canadian maestro

Bruce Haack made a series of albums for children before embarking on this classic slice of electronica and acid-rock. Based around the concept of the eternal battle between heaven and hell, it’s a psychedelic song-cycle on which Haack used the Moog and a whole host of other, homemade electronic gadgets.

Avant-garde and outsider from the opener, which begins with the vocoder vocals of collaborator Chris Kachulis, this is an eminently listenable fusion of psych and musique concrète that remains in splendid isolation. Cherubic Hymn sums it up, as garage beat and fuzz meld seamlessly with lush harmonies, while electronic squeals and squawks phase and meander underneath – it’s just not like anything or anyone else.

Rightly lauded as an early electronic masterpiece, the album is here remastered and restored from the original tapes and includes a couple of bonus tracks, one of which is an extended interview with the man himself.
