Caro Snatch - Es Muss Sein

Ladytron, and on, and on…

A curious clash of cultures – where old-school German beats meet street-wise English sass – Es Muss Sein (meaning ‘It Must Be’) is the limited-edition debut of formerly Newcastle, now Berlinbased, one-woman act Caroline Churchill. Bass-driven electronica, with Peaches-doing-poetry vocals laid over the top, Caro Snatch plays a convincing combination of one-part soul sister and onepart dashing dominatrix, utilising a fine mix of minimal instrumentation and maximum imagination to full effect.

While it’s reminiscent of several underground acts, in spirit at least, there’s more than a touch of Bjrk with, if not specifically sex, than certainly sensuality, playing a major part in these 14 tracks. Musically, minorkey ebbs, throbs and echoes wrestle for space around lyrics that can be suggestive, but never shocking. It’s a convincing combination, with Caro Snatch’s cool charisma carrying it off, and a DIY attitude reverberating throughout the entire nature of this release. An impressive, curious clash of cultures indeed.
