Praying Mantis
London Camden Purple Turtle
5th August, 2009
View: from the bar
A humid night of classic rock kicked off with Swedish fivepiece Core Of Nation, mixing Sabbath and Metallica at the stoner end. Good, but rather samey. Fury UK followed, a trio who picked up the pace with hints of Megadeth shred and Raven-esque crash-bang-wallop too. Headliners Praying Mantis, promoting their excellent new Sanctuary started with a good mix of sounds. Opening Children Of The Earth saw the band tight, with guitarist Tino Troy bouncing around, his guitar work touching on the frenetic. Brother Chris played a melodic, solid bass, and the NWOBHM quintet’s classic A Cry For The New World went down well, as did new Restless Heart, feedback aside. The bluesy ballad, Tears In The Rain, hinted of Whitesnake, while Rise Up featured a few bars of We Will Rock You. Technical trouble with Tino’s amp held up proceedings mid-set, and given the late stage time, the last train home was an issue for some, despite the good hard rock on show.
