Bat For Lashes
London Somerset House
16th July, 2009
View: standing
The Summer Series at London’s Somerset House is a fantastic idea in theory: outdoor concerts in the beautiful courtyard on a pleasant summer evening. But the rain was so torrential at times that the audience strained to see past a sea of umbrellas struggling with the elements. Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan was all too aware of this, being soaked despite her stage cover. But amid these distractions were moments of brilliance, the Brighton-based singer being a truly captivating performer. Opening with one of her finest songs, Trophy, she proceeded to rise above the weather, with particular highlights including Sarah and What’s A Girl To Do?. At only 40 minutes, the rainsoaked faithful could be forgiven for being disappointed, but a 20-minute encore, bookended by a haunting Priscilla and upbeat Daniel sent fans away happy.
