Genesis - Live 1973-2007

So much more than a bass-pedal solo

The last spike in Virgin’s impeccable reissue programme, Live 1973-2007 corrals together the live albums Genesis released during their career (and leaves a gap in the box for 2007’s When In Rome), all digitally remastered and, in the case of Genesis Live, Seconds Out and Live At The Rainbow, in 5.1.

There are several treats in store: five bonus tracks from the Shrine 1975 concert are added to Genesis Live. The selling point is the full nine-song Rainbow Concert from 1973 (five songs previously appeared on Archive 1967- 75), sounding impeccable, with The Battle Of Epping Forest positively charging out of the speakers. The Way We Walk is now presented in the running order of those concerts, showing just how professional Genesis had become. Three Sides Live sits here as unloved as it was in 1982 (ooh, a chance to hear Abacab material live), though it has a fab version of In The Cage. Seconds Out, however, still sounds remarkable, its gloss and tigthness in 5.1 proving what an essential live act Genesis truly were – especially Bill Bruford’s turn on the Cinema Show.

Put this by the other boxes and one day regale your grandchildren with tales of this most strange and beautiful of groups.
