Dawn - Candida/Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando
Aural equivalent of candy floss
The story goes that Tony Orlando, he of Bless You hit fame and Brill Building national service, agreed to be Dawn’s lead voice on the condition that he remain anonymous. The subsequent worldwide mega-hits with Candida, Knock Three Times and What Are You Doing Sunday understandably changed his outlook as he wallowed in the fleeting stardom. The act utilised the ultimate New York hit factory approach: take the big city Latin-tinged sound of The Drifters (and many others) and lay it on to simple, catchy, mid-tempo songs.
These 23 minor variations on the formula show that they knew how to milk the cash cow, but never offer any attempt to move beyond it. Respectable covers include Up On The Roof, Vaya Con Dios and Carolina On My Mind, but there are also somewhat pointless remakes of Runaway/Happy Together, Love The One You’re With and The Good Life. Simple, unpretentious pop, and no more.
