Chris McGregor Septet - Up To Earth

South African free jazz

Heavily influenced by the late 60s jazz scene in South Africa (where he lived for a while), and founder of the Blue Notes group, McGregor melded free jazz with the cultural bric-a-brac of his and his colleagues’ roots. Recorded in 1969, this album was slated for release on Island, until politics got in the way. The group features a selection of McGregor’s South African braves, plus a young Evan Parker, John Surman and Danny Thompson (though some claim it was Barre Philips, who was in on the session). As you can guess, there are no holds barred here, the arrangements roaming the savannah of McGregor’s mind. It’s not chaotic, as some free jazz can be, because McGregor calls the shots, while the rest of the musicians play with one eye on their leader’s cues. Magnificent, blissful and a pleasant change to the moody stuff you often hear from the States.
