Acid Jazz - London Street Soul 1988- 2009: 21 Years Of Acid Jazz Records

Still keeping the faith: 1988’s young soul rebels come of age

Taking inspiration from original mod DJ Guy Stevens’ Sue label, Eddie Piller and DJ Gilles Peterson launched Acid Jazz in 1988 after the their wildly-successful club night, providing a clued-up outlet for British soul talent and bonkers musical mavericks. Chart success went hand-in-hand with disasters but the label kept going, becoming a success story in itself.

Acid Jazz celebrates its 21st year with three compilations, starting with this sublimely diverse soul collection.

To its credit, the set doesn’t take the greatest hits route, preferring to highlight lesser-known names such as lunatic beatsters The Sandals alongside successes the likes of Brand New Heavies, plus contemporary descendants including new warped jazz signings Twisted Tongue and spiritual modfather Paul Weller’s 2008 collaboration with Andy Lewis. Rarely has such a fine balance between reckless passion and sophisticated, genredefying music been so finely distilled.
