Bintangs - Genuine Bull

Long-standing Dutch rockers get the double treatment

Bintangs were pretty much the closest thing Holland ever had to The Rolling Stones. With that in mind, this is their Exile On Main Street, an infectious and energetic mix of blues-plus that was recorded in Wales’ legendary Rockfield Studios in 1975, with Italian producer Steve Verocca at the helm.

By this time, on their 29th line-up, the band laid down an effortlessly cool series of elaborate, ballsy rock that more than stands up today. Opener Hobo Man plays the Stones card a little too hard but, elsewhere, they show they had plenty of their own sass; Bayou Woman, for example, tips a hat to Beefheart, with growlin’ vocals and a pounding heart-inspired beat. The guitar playing is taut and tight throughout and, on tracks such as Travelling Mood, they mix that with inventive structures that go beyond the expected – adding keyboard and sax into the messy, rock mix.

Currently without a UK release, this bonus-packed reissue is a chance to hear some of the best rock to ever come out of the flat country.
