Andrea Parker - Here’s One I Made Earlier

Early exploits of UK’s electro mayhem-merchant

Andrea Parker might have spent the 21st Century unleashing increasingly fearsome electro mutations from a global network of sonic psychos on her Touchin’ Bass imprint, but the lady has also notched up a formidable body of work both under her own name and with Belgium-based electronic maverick David Morley (as Two Sandwiches Short Of A Lunchbox). This CD charts her initial excursions before she appeared on Andrew Weatherall’s Sabres Of Paradise label as part of Inky Blackness, and later Mo’ Wax. Starting with 1991’s (previouslyunreleased) Time Zone, a stringstroked Detroit-influenced delight, it ropes together luxuriously-deep electronic soundscapes created with Morley for Belgium’s Apollo label and Creation’s old techno offshoot Infonet, plus tracks from her 2000 mini-album for Belgium’s Quatermas label.

The beats might not yet sound like jackhammers on amphetamine, but the hauntingly atmospheric melodies and textures littered with startlinglyodd electronic whoopee are fascinating blueprints for her later, more brutal work. The fact that this chaos-revelling B-girl punkette can be responsible for some of repackaged time and again over the years, and this latest Very Best Of does a predictable and perfunctory job of bringing together her 20 most familiar tunes. Newcomers to Parton’s pleasures may honestly be best served investigating the three double-headers in this second wave of the reissue campaign. 1977’s New Harvest, First Gathering makes its bow on CD and documents Parton’s first tentative steps into the pop mainstream, a move which resulted in her losing her way H Album Reviews the most extreme electronic noise terror around, yet coaxed these soul-soothing space symphonies and arresting experiments out of her machines, is only part of what makes Andrea Parker such a vital force in an often-faceless field.
