Der Moderne Man - Drama, Speil Und Blud

Brilliant German new wavers finally go digital…

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this important German new wave band, SPV/ Brain have released a 2-CD set compilation of their finest moments – and what fine moments they are. Though forming in 1979, they were never as witless or unmusical as the second tranche of UK punk bands, and incorporated elements of punk, new wave, ska, reggae, dub, PiL’s death disco, Joy Division’s cold bassline romance and even The Killing Joke into their sound.

Das Disco-Lied, from their debut EP, sounds like unvarnished Gang Of Four, while Telefonlied, from their fantastic debut LP 80 Tage Auf See, with its plant bassline, reggae lilt and bubbling synth, is simply superb – even if you don’t have a clue what the lyrics are about. Der Unbekannte is deliciously controlled punk, while the re-recorded Gib Mir Den Tod combines the skank of ska with the playful studio anarchy of PiL’s Fodderstomp. All the group’s various line-ups are present and correct, while Disc Two features the 1983 mini-album Neues Aus Hong Kong, while also documenting Der Moderne Man’s live muscles from dates in 1981 and 1983. An unexpected delight – buy! buy!
