Van Halen/RHCP/Deep Purple supergroup debut
Take Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and singer/guitarist Sammy Hagar, the Chilis’ drummer Chad Smith and guitar genius Joe Satriani, and the results should be spectacular. If not quite all that could’ve been, their 11-song debut is an impressive melding of their variegated hard rock styles. There’s trademark headrush Satch guitar on mid-tempo opener Avenida Revolution, propped by heavyweight rhythms, while Soap On A Rope marries syncopated swagger with a crescendo of axe-work. Oh Yeah thumps along like latterday Hagar-fronted Van Halen and, with its slick-as-hell vocals, Runnin’ Out could’ve come from OU812. The energetic and Eastern-leaning Get It Up rages into the rumbling Down The Drain, with My Kinda Girl adding harmonica and female backing vocals. Turnin’ Left is another sweet riff building to a climax, before the closing The Future Is The Past takes things down in Spartan piano form.
