Moby Grape - The Place & The Time

A fine, piquant mix of unreleased, vintage Grape

Despite a series of unfortunate, though largely self-inflicted obstacles, Moby Grape have risen to an enviably special place in the history of American rock. This overdue look at their back pages, therefore, is an expected blast. Taut, pithy and stylish, their brand of heavy-psych melodica is perhaps at its very best on some of the demos included here. Sweet Ride (Never Again), recorded for the film The Sweet Ride, is typically edgy and dark – the tensions in the band as palpable as ever. On alternate versions of What’s To Choose and Soul Stew they reveal the structural beauty behind their full-bodied music but, for the most part, this is an upbeat mix of their best rock from their best years.

Balancing outtakes from their studio efforts, with demos and a couple of live numbers, most notably, Miller’s Blues from 1968, Sundazed have here done all freak fans a major service.
