Bossa Rio - Bossa Rio

Groove-laden Brazilliance from the school of Sergio Mendes

Produced by A&M’s resident king of crossover bossa-pop Sergio Mendes, Bossa Rio’s self-titled debut is, like sunlight bursting through the clouds, hard to ignore. Featuring the lead vocals of Gracinha Leporace (Mrs Sergio Mendes) and arranger Manfredo Fest’s busy, vibe-fuelled organ playing, everything the sixpiece group touch is coated in musical sophistication.

Taking their stylistic cue from the big-selling releases of Sergio Mendes’ Brasil 66, Bossa Rio mix cool and stylish reworkings of recent US pop hits (Bacharach & David’s Do You Know The Way To San Jose; Jimmy Webb’s Up, Up & Away) with trusty standards (Day By Day and Old Devil Moon). The balance of the album comprises infectously jazz-hued versions of a winning selection of songs sung in their native Portuguese, from what’s essentially the pantheon of contemporary Brazilian songwriters. Check the versions of Jorge Ben’s Saiupa, Caetano Veloso’s and Milton Nascimento’s Cancão Do Sal for some measure of this group’s gold-plated credentials.
