Candi Staton
Basildon Towngate Theatre
23rd February, 2009
View: looking straight into
Ms. Staton’s eyes Playing to a crowd largely there for one song, Candi proved a masterful host. Showcasing her remarkable new Who’s Hurting Now, she straddled the line between doing exactly what she wanted, and exactly what the crowd craved. From her earliest singles to recent hits, everything was delivered with conviction and economy, with a British band containing Mick Talbot on keys. Of course, when Young Hearts Run Free comes, the place goes berserk. In her extended version, she converts the Towngate into a Southern Baptist church, and pops a swaggering You Got The Love on top of it. Given the amount of oldies that sit down, they clearly have no idea about this beast. Although it wasn’t one of her songs, Staton made a drizzly Monday in Basildon a rainy night in Georgia.
