Glen Campbell - Greatest Hits
Quickie compilation for the most casual of browser
Capitol still have a far-reaching 2-CD best of on catalogue, so there’s something a wee bit cynical about this rush job to cash in on last year’s covers project, Meet Glen Campbell. Two songs from that release, versions of Foo Fighters’ Times Like These and Jackson Browne’s These Days, are included here alongside just 14 earlier big hitters.
The covers album was undeniably Campbell’s most satisfying record for years, giving the likes of Tom Petty and Travis the lush, string-driven country treatment of Glen’s formative glories. This compilation serves to remind us of the singer’s emotive power on heartbreakers such as By The Time I Get To Phoenix and Wichita Lineman, and his 70s resurgence with Rhinestone Cowboy and Southern Nights.
In that respect, there are no quibbles with the choice of songs (except maybe the soporific movie theme True Grit), it’s just that there are opportunities to get hold of so many more for around the same price.
