Bonnie Dobson - Good Morning Rain
Something to cheer up any rainy day
Bonnie Dobson’s voice was one of the clearest among her late 60s contemporaries. It was suited equally well to both US folk-rock and to other, very English, songs. Dobson’s own originals, Sweet Man and the title track, are quietly effective, but the cover versions really lift the album.
There are three Ralph McTell covers: Clown, Factory Girl and Streets Of London, all of which are strong, with the latter being a very fine version recorded well before McTell saw a hit with the song. Another standout is Jim Webb’s Do What You Gotta Do, which underlines the outstanding quality of his early songs, while Dobson’s reading of A Taste Of Honey is lovely. Although there are only 11 tracks, this reissue, enhanced by enthusiastic notes from BMX Bandit mainman Duglas Stewart, is well worth checking out.
